Dustin Payne Makes His Debut at the Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale

For collectors and admirers of Western art, few milestones carry the significance of being invited to participate in the prestigious Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale. In 2026, acclaimed Western sculptor Dustin Payne reaches that milestone for the very first time, marking an exciting new chapter in a career already defined by craftsmanship, authenticity, and a deep respect for the American West.

Hosted annually at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Prix de West is considered one of the premier Western art exhibitions in the nation. Since its founding in 1973, the exhibition has brought together many of the most celebrated painters and sculptors working in Western art today. The invitational show is known not only for its exceptional quality, but also for its role in preserving and advancing the legacy of Western American art.

For Dustin Payne, the invitation represents years of dedication to both his craft and the traditions that inspire it.

Born into a ranching and rodeo family in southern New Mexico in 1981, Dustin grew up immersed in the lifestyle he now portrays in bronze. As a third-generation sculptor, art was woven into everyday life from an early age. Endless inspiration came from the works of Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, and the writings and illustrations of Will James, but Dustin’s understanding of the West was shaped most profoundly through firsthand experience. Ranch work, horses, cattle, and the enduring character of the people who lived that life became the foundation for his artistic vision.

Over the years, Dustin has become widely recognized for his historically grounded sculptures and his ability to capture movement, emotion, and storytelling in bronze. His work reflects not only technical precision, but also a reverence for the spirit and grit of the American frontier.

His growing list of achievements has firmly established him among today’s leading Western sculptors. In 2017, Dustin was inducted into the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America. He later earned the Gold Medal for Sculpture at the Cowboy Artists of America Exhibition & Sale in 2021, along with the Ray Swanson Memorial Award for his celebrated piece Tales of the Trail. Additional honors followed, including Silver Awards for Sculpture in both 2023 and 2024, as well as the Museum Purchase Award at the 2025 Briscoe Western Art Museum Night of Artists.

Collectors across the country have also come to recognize Dustin’s monumental public works, including The Legend, The Lore, The Law, his life-size tribute to the Texas Rangers now displayed at the Museum of Western Art, along with his larger-than-life depictions of Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving in Pueblo, Colorado.

Now, with his first appearance in Prix de West, Dustin joins a distinguished lineage of artists whose work helps define the future of Western art while honoring its past.

“This invitation means a great deal to me,” Dustin shared. “Prix de West has long represented the highest level of Western art and craftsmanship. To be included among artists I’ve admired for years is both humbling and exciting. I’m especially looking forward to meeting collectors, fellow artists, and being part of an event that celebrates the history and spirit of the West.”

As Dustin prepares for his debut at Prix de West, this moment stands not only as a professional achievement, but also as a reflection of the lifelong journey that brought him here, from the ranches of New Mexico to one of the most respected exhibitions in Western art.

Collectors attending this year’s exhibition will have the opportunity to experience Dustin Payne’s work firsthand and witness the next step in an already remarkable career.
